Another snippet of Such Great Deeds--progressing in such tiny steps...

Time: shortly before the Nirnaeth
Rating: Teens
Warnings: none
Length: c. 450 words

What went before:
‘Tell me, Beleg,’ said Fingon, abruptly, as they walked alone together through Barad Eithel that night—‘if we should be defeated—but of course we shall win!—will Doriath stand, on its own?'
And: 'I am driven to the conclusion that, apparently, I understand neither the powers of Queen Melian and her daughter nor their limitations… You would know much more of this, I imagine, than I.’
Here now is Beleg's answer.

Fingon / Maedhros.
A true drabble according to MS Word.
Rating: Teens
Warnings: none

hhimring: (Default)
Drabble sequence written for the Fellowship Challenge at Tolkien Weekly.
Originally this was an independent plot bunny, which involved a frame story in which Maedhros, returning to Valinor, finds out that the Eldar have distrusted all Men except the Edain since the First Age and attempts to write in defence of the Easterlings or at least his loyal allies among them.
(I had also envisaged a different ending to this drabble sequence. The prompt series ended more abruptly than I expected.)

Characters: Maedhros, son of Feanor;  Bor, chieftain of an Easterling tribe; his sons Borlach, Borlad and Borthand; his aunt Borgun (OFC)
Rating: PG to PG13
Length: four single drabbles, one double drabble

Another instalment.
Perhaps I should not post this part separately, as it ends in the middle of a conversation--but the conversation is a long one and I fear that, due to RL goings-on, the story might be about to get stalled again. I don't want to leave posting it until it gets cold, as it were.

Characters: Beleg, Gwindor, Fingon, Forgam (OMC), Berion (OMC)
Rating: Teens
Warnings: consumption of alcohol, angst of the Dagor Bragollach variety, slightly dubious canonicity
Word Count: c.1700

The plot so far: In the run-up to the Battle of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad: Mablung and Beleg have arrived in Barad Eithel and are waiting for the call to action, but the host of Hithlum has not quite finished assembling and there is still a bit of a lull before the storm.
During  a chance encounter, Beleg has been alerted by Captain Berion that the local innkeeper has sent for help in dealing with Gwindor, who is drinking heavily in her establishment. He has offered to go and keep an eye on things while Berion goes looking for a friend of Gwindor's to come and fetch him back safely to his quarters. When Beleg arrives at the inn, Gwindor turns out to be seemingly volatile and by no means completely lucid, but not actually physically aggressive. Berion arrives with Gwindor's friend. To Beleg's surprise, Fingon is also with them.

A drabble sequence on Brandir of Brethil and his family.
Written for the prompt sequence "Celebrate" at Tolkien Weekly, but despite this somewhat dark in parts.
The drabbles are here given in the chronological sequence of the events described.
(I may perhaps expand the sequence later to get a more satisfactory arc.)

Characters: Brandir the Lame, healer and (later) Warden of Brethil; his paternal grandmother Gloredhel (House of Hador); his mother Beldis (House of Beor); his elder cousin Hunleth; his younger cousin Hunthor; Dorlas of Brethil; Finduilas of Nargothrond; Turin, son of Hurin (the Mormegil).
Rating: PG13
Warnings: canonical character deaths, allusion to Gwindor's sufferings in Angband and other mature themes.

Managed to get this moving again!
Still a little way  to go, though, before Beleg and Fingon can have that one-on-one conversation they've been heading for for ages...
At least here's Beleg inside the inn, finally, coming to salvage Gwindor from the shipwreck of the evening.

Characters: Beleg, Gwindor
Rating: Teens
Warning: consumption of alcohol
Word Count: c. 775 words

This is my fic for [personal profile] huinare's June of Doom & Gloom Challenge.
It is actually not the gloomiest plot bunny I could come up with, but the gloomiest I felt able to commit to writing this month.
It may still need a bit of tweaking, but I decided to go ahead and post it, the way you do (or maybe you don't), to prove I could.
It's got some characters I never tried my hand at before and a thrilling absence of plot centred on a non-event.

Title: Maedhros and the Palantir
Characters: Maedhros (Nelyafinwe Maitimo), Saruman (Curumo), Feanor (Feanaro), Mahtan, Gandalf (Olorin)
Setting: Valinor
Summary: Maedhros has just finished collaborating with Feanor on the first Palantir. The Palantir is launched at a major reception in Feanor's house.
Rating: General (i.e. no sex, no violence, but probably entirely unsuitable for young kids)
Gloom rating: c. 5/10; Doom rating: c. 7/10
Length:  2100+ words

Perilous to us all are the devices of an art deeper than we possess ourselves.

(A little gloomy for Easter, I'm afraid. Sorry!)

The following quote was a B2MeM prompt in 2013. At the time, I sort of cheated and wrote "A Little Slow", which is wholly set in Tirion.
Then recently, during the Silm Re-Read, the quote came up again:

"Fëanor and his sons abode seldom in one place for long, but travelled far and wide upon the confines of Valinor, going even to the borders of the Dark and the cold shores of the Outer Sea, seeking the unknown".

Characters: Fingon, Maedhros
Setting: Valinor
Rating: General
Word Count: c.370 words

My compilation piece has had its reveal date.
Anyone on my f-list who happens to read it--would this piece benefit from more geeky footnotage? I figured that an Author's Note that mentioned Quenya and "mother's name" might already be off-putting enough, so I sat on my hands. But if anything puzzles you and you'd like it explained, don't be shy and ask!

Title: Forging Gold
Prompt: (B2MeM 2014: Winter) Use the following song to inspire your writing or artwork: "Crystal Forest" by Nox Arcana
Summary:  Maglor and three of his brothers on a day towards the end of the Fell Winter (First Age).
Rating: General
Warnings: none
Author's Notes: The title alludes to the alleged meaning of Maglor’s mother name (Quenya Makalaure, also rendered as “Gold-cleaver”).  Maglor’s father name Kanafinwe is also mentioned, as is the shortened form Kano.

Advancing in baby steps...

Summary: In the run-up to the Battle of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Mablung and Beleg have arrived in Barad Eithel. Now they are waiting for the call to action, but the host of Hithlum has not quite finished assembling and there is still a bit of a lull before the storm.

Characters: Beleg, Gwindor, Berion (OMC)
Word Count: c. 775 words
Rating: Teens (this part: General)
Warning: reference to consumption of alcohol

Just a short scene, but I decided to post it on its own.

Characters: Mablung, Beleg (and reference to Hurin)

Rating: Teens (this part perhaps General)

Word Count: c. 440 words

Summary: In the run-up to the Battle of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Mablung and Beleg have arrived in Barad Eithel and have been received by Fingon and talked about the situation with Cirdan. On the way back from a meeting with Hurin and Huor, they have a conversation.

It's three months since I posted the last instalment! Tough going...

Characters: Mablung, Fingon, Beleg, Cirdan
Warnings: a bit angsty
Rating: Teens
Word count: c.950

Summary: Beleg and Fingon met at Ivrin, just before the Mereth Aderthad. Beleg took a liking to Fingon and Fingon revealed that Beleg was a childhood hero of this. However, even then, things were somewhat strained by the diplomatic situation between the Noldor and Doriath--and not  long afterwards Angrod revealed the secret of the Kinslaying at Alqualonde, in which Fingon was also involved, although less culpably so than the Sons of Feanor.
However, rather than dealing directly with the consequences of that revelation, I'm skipping straight ahead to the period just before the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Beleg and Mablung arrive in Barad Eithel...

You can tell I've been reading the B2MeM prompts list.

Archiving a drabble sequence written for the Tolkien Weekly Tree Challenge---eight drabbles spanning the history of Numenor, with a particular focus on the period of Aldarion

Characters: Voronwe, Elros; Almarian, Aldarion, Gil-galad, Ancalime, Beregar, Erendis; Isildur, Elendil, Anarion, Miriel, Pharazon; Gilraen, Aragorn

Warnings: canonical character death, canonical reference to possible suicide (implied), canonical reference to dubious consent (implied)

I'm ordering these chronologically for now (i.e. chronologically in-universe, not in order of writing), although I can think of other possible arrangements.
